Safety disclaimer

Draft — last updated October 2, 2026

Backcountry skiing and snowboarding are dangerous. Avalanches, falls, weather and terrain can injure or kill you. You are responsible for your own decisions in the mountains.

The data can be wrong

  • Routes on PowRoute are GPS recordings made by users on a particular day, labeled by hand. GPS positions and elevations can be off, and a route may be mislabeled or out of date.
  • Slope angles are measured along the recorded track: how steeply the person travelled, not how steep the terrain is. A line skied across a slope reads flatter than the slope itself. The terrain around and above a route can be much steeper than the number shown.
  • A route having been skied says nothing about whether it is safe today.

Not a substitute

PowRoute is a way to keep and share route notes. It is not a substitute for a current avalanche forecast, avalanche training, the right rescue gear and partners who know how to use it, or your own judgment on the day. Check the forecast, read the terrain in front of you, and turn around when in doubt.
